What Is That Clicking Noise In My Pump?

If you hear a clicking noise during a CIP cycle, it is often a normal part of your pump’s self-cleaning operation.

The TOP-FLO TF-C Series Pump is specifically designed for Clean-in-Place (CIP) applications, allowing processors to clean and sanitize product-contact surfaces without disassembling the pump.

The TF-C Series features angular grooves on the impeller hub and shaft that create turbulence during operation, helping flush and clean hard-to-reach internal areas. The pump also utilizes a floating retainer pin design that self-cleans during the CIP process.

During motor “bumping” or stop-and-start cycling, the floating pin moves back and forth inside the shaft hole, creating the clicking noise operators may notice. This movement is intentional and helps clean the retainer pin assembly.

In most cases, hearing this clicking sound during CIP is completely normal and indicates the pump’s self-cleaning design is functioning properly.
